Diamond Beach in Iceland
Diamond Beach is the ice-strewn black beach beside Jökulsárlón on Iceland’s South Coast. The beach is called Fellsfjara and lies south of Route 1. Breiðamerkursandur is the larger glacial outwash plain around it. These names describe connected parts of the landscape, so use the lagoon and the road as your bearings when planning a visit.
Ice breaks from Breiðamerkurjökull, passes through Jökulsárlón and reaches the coast through the river and sea. Pieces can wash onto the dark sand, creating the contrast behind the beach’s familiar name. Their position, size and appearance change with the water and weather. Make the visit about the coastal landscape rather than a particular arrangement of ice seen in a photograph.
Choose between a Reykjavík day trip, a longer South Coast journey and a private vehicle with a guide. For independent travel, start with getting there and the parking guide. At the site, use the path under the bridge when moving between the lagoon and beach; the national park advises against walking across the road bridge.

Things to do around the shore
Beach walk B2
Walk the designated B2 beach route from the photography exhibition at Eystri-Fellsfjara towards the shore and river. The national park describes a 1 km return walk with interpretation about wildlife and glacier retreat. Allow time to look at the panels as well as the ice, rather than treating the shore solely as a quick photo stop.
The wider plain is a breeding area for birds including skuas and barnacle geese. Respect wildlife and keep to marked paths. Leave natural material where it lies, take rubbish away and keep dogs on a lead. The history guide explains how glaciers shaped the plain and why the coast continues to change.
For transport choices, compare day tours, two- and three-day tours and private tours from Reykjavík. A private itinerary can offer scheduled photo stops or a flexible route where the chosen product includes them; a shared departure suits visitors who prefer an organised group journey.
Photography and sunrise
Light passing through clear ice, blue pieces against dark sand and the wider shoreline offer different compositions. Choose a viewpoint on land with room to retreat from the water. Never climb onto ice or use a piece in the surf as a platform. Unexpected waves can reach farther up the beach than the previous set.
Sunrise is a photography idea, rather than an appointment with a fixed scene. Plan for the actual weather and light on your visit, and let safety decide how close you approach. Keep watching the sea while taking pictures and accompany children. See seasons and light for planning and beach safety for waves and winter travel.

Jökulsárlón and boat trips
The lagoon and beach work as linked stops, but a boat ride is a separate activity on the lagoon. Some day trips include a boat ticket, while others offer it as a seasonal option. Match the activity to the exact package rather than treating every coastal tour as a cruise. Read more about Jökulsárlón lagoon and boat trips.
The ice originates in a much larger glacial landscape. For the wider protected area, use Vatnajökull glacier and national park. Keep overnight plans separate from the beach visit: Breiðamerkursandur is marked for no overnight stays. Choose an appropriate base in the Höfn or Skaftafell area instead of planning to sleep in a vehicle at the shore.

Questions about Diamond Beach
Is this the national park website?
This is an independent visitor guide, separate from Vatnajökull National Park and the organisations responsible for the area.
Where does the ice come from?
It comes from Breiðamerkurjökull through Jökulsárlón, then travels via the river and sea to the shore.
Can I walk over the road bridge?
Use the pedestrian route under the bridge. The national park advises against walking across the road bridge.
Is the same ice always on the beach?
The water and weather move and reshape the ice. Treat photographs as examples of the landscape rather than a scene to expect unchanged.
