Diamond Beach History: Black Sand, Glacier Ice and Change

Diamond Beach history is written in a changing landscape: glacier erosion shaped Breiðamerkursandur, while ice travels through Jökulsárlón to the black shore.

Diamond Beach history begins beyond the shore

Diamond Beach history connects the black shore at Fellsfjara with the larger glacial outwash plain of Breiðamerkursandur. The area was formerly called Breiðársandur. Glacier erosion, deposited material and the retreat of Breiðamerkurjökull have shaped the landscape. The beach is one part of that setting, where ice against dark sand gives Diamond Beach its descriptive name.

It helps to separate the names when looking around. Fellsfjara is the coast south of Route 1 beside Jökulsárlón; Breiðamerkursandur describes the wider plain south of the glacier. Diamond Beach is a shoreline viewpoint within this landscape. The ice that reaches it has a journey from glacier to lagoon, river and sea, rather than belonging to a separate glacier named after the beach.

Glacier advance, retreat and the outwash plain

The glacier advanced from the 13th century into the 18th and 19th centuries, then began retreating in the early 20th century. These broad phases explain why a visit here is about landscape change as much as a single photograph. The plain holds the results of glacial erosion and deposition, while retreat continues to alter the relationship between ice, water and exposed land.

An outwash plain provides a useful frame for what can otherwise look like an empty stretch of dark ground. Look across the wider landscape as well as down at individual pieces of ice. The name Breiðamerkursandur describes that broader setting. For the glacier and protected area beyond this beach-focused account, continue to Vatnajökull glacier and national park.

How glacier ice reaches Diamond Beach

Ice from Breiðamerkurjökull travels through Jökulsárlón towards the sea. Pieces can then reach the black shore, where they form the contrast associated with Diamond Beach. The river and ocean are part of that route. The shore is therefore connected to the lagoon, while remaining a different place with its own waves, access route and visitor precautions.

Ice quantity, colour, size and position vary with conditions, including tides, weather and season. A photograph records a moment in that process. Plan to observe the coast as you find it rather than expecting the same arrangement of ice seen in an earlier image. The exhibition and information panels on B2

The photography exhibition by the Eystri-Fellsfjara parking area offers another way to read the landscape. The National Park identifies photographs by Ragnar Th. from the park. The B2 beach route starts by the exhibition, continues towards the beach and leads on towards the river. Its information panels cover wildlife and glacier retreat, connecting the view with processes that are less obvious during a brief stop.

B2 is listed as an easy 1 km return walk. Give yourself time to read the panels and look across the plain, rather than treating the path solely as a way to reach a photograph. When moving between lagoon and shore, use the route under the bridge instead of walking over the road bridge. The parking guide covers payment and access, while beach safety explains how to approach the surf.

Wildlife, protection and planning a visit

The area has been part of the National Park since 2017. Breiðamerkursandur is a breeding area for birds including skuas and barnacle geese. This is a living environment as well as a record of landscape change: keep to marked paths, leave natural materials where they lie and avoid disturbing animals. The information panels are a useful place to learn about wildlife without turning the visit into a search for guaranteed sightings.

Photography should leave the setting intact. Do not rearrange natural materials or build cairns, and keep dogs on leads. Observe the sea, keep children accompanied and never climb ice in the water. To include the coast in a Reykjavík itinerary, compare day trips to Diamond Beach. The guided outing with a boat ticket combines beach and lagoon sightseeing, giving you both settings within a day on the South Coast.

Frequently asked questions

Why is it called Diamond Beach?

The name refers to the contrast of glacier ice pieces on black sand. Their shapes, colours and positions change, so the shore can look different from photographs.

Are Fellsfjara and Breiðamerkursandur the same thing?

Fellsfjara is the beach, while Breiðamerkursandur is the larger glacial outwash plain. Distinguishing them helps explain the coast within the surrounding landscape.

Where can I learn about glacier retreat on site?

The B2 route has information panels about glacier retreat and wildlife, as well as a photography exhibition by the Eystri-Fellsfjara parking area.

How long has the area been in the National Park?

It has formed part of the National Park since 2017. Follow the marked routes and leave the natural setting undisturbed during your visit.
