How to get to Diamond Beach via Route 1
Deciding how to get to Diamond Beach means choosing between driving Iceland's South Coast, using the scheduled bus or joining a guided outing from Reykjavík. Fellsfjara, the beach known as Diamond Beach, lies south of Route 1 opposite Jökulsárlón lagoon. The road brings you to the visitor area; the final approach to the sand is on foot.
For an international arrival, select Keflavík Airport, coded KEF. Reykjavík Airport, RKV, is a different airport. Keep the airport journey separate from the onward South Coast journey when arranging transport. A tour starting in Reykjavík needs its own arrival plan, including time to reach the designated pickup point.

Taxi and transfer from Keflavík Airport (KEF)
Airport buses, Strætó route 55, taxis and rental cars provide ways to leave KEF. For a guided beach trip, arrange the airport leg to Reykjavík, then the tour departure. When requesting a private transfer, name the actual destination: Reykjavík and Diamond Beach are different journeys. Obtain a quote covering your chosen route rather than treating an airport-to-city fare as a South Coast fare.
Route 55 is the airport connection. The network arrangement effective from 1 January 2026 includes weekday services to BSÍ and services at other times ending at Fjörður. The South Coast bus leaves from Mjódd. Check the terminals and the current timetable separately, allowing for the journey between stops instead of relying on a connecting departure.
A guided trip from Reykjavík
The small-group minibus offers an organised journey from designated Reykjavík pickup points.

A guided South Coast day from Reykjavík
The 14-hour minibus outing includes Diamond Beach and Fjaðrárgjúfur Canyon, with designated Reykjavík pickup points and a driver-guide. Food and drinks are extra.
Reykjavík to Diamond Beach
The organised minibus alternative carries a maximum of 19 passengers and includes live commentary and pickup and drop-off at designated bus stops and hotels in Reykjavík. Its 14-hour duration describes the whole excursion, including the programme. Arrange your arrival in the city around that departure. See the Diamond Beach tours comparison for the wider choice of guided day trips.
For independent bus travel, use route 52, which replaced the former South Coast use of route 51. The timetable valid from 1 March 2026 lists departures on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays. Eastbound it leaves Mjódd at 14:18 and reaches Jökulsárlón at 20:22. Westbound it passes Jökulsárlón at 14:10. That sequence requires planning an overnight stay rather than assuming a same-day return on these services. Check for a newer timetable before travel.
The scheduled Mjódd to Jökulsárlón journey in that timetable takes 6 hours 4 minutes. This is a bus journey, not an estimate for driving. When combining the service with a flight, plan both the airport connection and the overnight arrangement before committing to the beach visit.
Car rental and parking
For a self-drive route, arrange rental-car pickup at Keflavík Airport (KEF). Choose the collection and return arrangements around your flight and the South Coast itinerary. Read the vehicle and rental terms for your own journey; an airport search result alone does not establish insurance cover or suitability for winter conditions.
At the destination, Jökulsárlón, Eystri-Fellsfjara and Vestari-Fellsfjara share a parking-payment zone. Payment applies until midnight on the paid calendar day. Enter the correct registration number when paying by app, website or machine. The parking and payment guide explains the vehicle categories and payment conditions.
Find a rental car at Keflavík Airport (KEF) on QEEQ.
The last stretch and winter planning
Choose your overnight stops before arranging an early or late beach visit. That keeps accommodation, transport and the walk to the shore within the same practical plan.
Use the pedestrian route under the bridge when moving between the lagoon and beach; avoid walking over the road bridge. Keep the sea in view on the sand and stay away from the water's edge. Toilets are located at the lagoon, so include that stop in your visit rather than expecting facilities beside every stretch of beach.
Before driving, consult road.is for road conditions, vedur.is for weather and SafeTravel.is for travel warnings. Snow, ice and strong wind can change the day's plan. Be ready to wait safely if conditions deteriorate. Choose an overnight base near the region and read the beach safety advice before setting out.
